Name of man who drowned in Sunnyside canal released

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. -- Authorities have released the name of a man who drowned in a Sunnyside canal Wednesday.

Yakima County Coroner Jack Hawkins identified the man as 56-year-old Jerry Peal of Sunnyside.

Police say Peal was suspected of shoplifting from Wal-Mart and either jumped or fell into the canal while trying to get away from a store employee.

Officers say the employee went into the canal to try to rescue Peal but was unable to save him.

      The employee was not hurt.
