As of last week, Yakima police cited 27 drivers for texting and driving since the beginning of the year. That's almost four times more than the same period last year.
Yakima driver Gabriel Torres admits texting while driving once and almost crashed. He vowed never to do it again.
"I was shocked. It was weird because I could have taken a person's life or serious injured them over a text message, so it's pointless really."
Yakima police say most violators seem to be in their twenties. The fine for texting and driving is 124 dollars.
