More preventable hospitalizations in Yakima than the state

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Hundreds of people in Yakima County are admitted to the hospital for illnesses or injuries that could be prevented. The Yakima County Health District estimates almost 70 out of every thousand people end up in the hospital for serious symptoms that could have been avoided.

One doctor at Yakima Regional hospital says it's all too common.

"You don't have to wait until you have symptoms. Most of the things that cause patients to end up in the hosptial actually start with no symptom. And they will come and say "oh doctor, I'm so surprised this happened to me." Well, it could happen to anybody," said Yakima Regional Hospital Internal Medicine physician Dr. Ogechi Mbakwe.

Doctors say regular checkups are the best way to prevent any serious health problem from developing.
