The KIMA Crime Tracker found there were four times more cars stolen in the city than the county in 2012.
More than one thousand car thefts in Yakima last year. Fewer than 250 in the county.
"Our crime analyst that we just brought on is aggressively identifying areas where cars are being stolen from, where they're being dumped and providing that information to patrol," said Yakima Police Captain Rod Light.
Yakima police are still working with prosecutors on strategies to have convicted car thieves serve longer prison sentences.
