Majority of HIV diagnosis in Yakima County are late term

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Most HIV cases here in Yakima County are being diagnosed later. The Washington Department of Health says 56 percent recently diagnosed with HIV were in later stages, which is much higher than the state's 34 percent.

Planned Parenthood blames a misconception about testing.

"At the end of the day people just don't know that they need to get tested regularly. Additionally, I think that a lot of people have this idea that HIV tests are very scary thing that can take weeks and weeks, where really it can be same day or just a few days."

Planned Parenthood emphasizes community outreach and AIDS education as much as possible.
