Kittitas County Washington's 2nd-healthiest, Yakima County 35th

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A new study has found Kittitas County is one of the healthiest counties in Washington - while Yakima County is among the state's least-healthy.

The fifth annual County Health Rankings gave Kittitas County the state's second-highest score for overall health outcomes. The ranking is based on the rate of premature death, the percentage of children with low birthweight, and self-reported physical and mental health.

Yakima County was ranked 35th of the state's 39 counties.

The study also ranked counties on health factors. Yakima County was 37th in that ranking, due to its high rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, as well as its large number of people without health insurance. Kittitas County was ranked 13th.

The study was produced by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of WIsconsin Population Health Institute.
