Judge says Selah city officials can inspect unsafe apartment complex
SELAH, Wash. - A Yakima County Superior Court Judge decided that city officials can inspect the living conditions at an apartment complex in Selah.
The Selah fire department discovered the dangerous living conditions when they were called to the apartment when a tenant fell through a hole in the floor because the floor had rotted.
The city's lawyer said the city did what they could but they can't force an inspection.
"You can't get an administrative warrant for code enforcement, you can't just go on their property and engage an inspection," he said. "So the city did what it could do from the area open to the public."
Steve and Janet Owens own the apartment complex and their lawyer said they tried to ask what they could due to make the building safer but said they were ignored by the city and then were presented with a lawsuit.
