Investigators say 50-acre Cowiche Canyon fire intentionally set with fireworks
YAKIMA, Wash. - Firefighters say a fire at Cowiche Canyon Road in Yakima was started after lit fireworks were thrown in the area.
A shop building was lost and roughly 40 to 50 acres of land were scorched in a fire at the 5600 block of Cowiche Canyon Road, according to the Yakima Fire Department (YFD).
YFD investigators learned from three witnesses the fire was started from fireworks being lit and thrown from a moving vehicle. Investigators confirmed these reports when they found a discharged ground bloom flower where the fire started.
Fire officials are asking anyone with information regarding the incident or the individuals who may have started this fire to call 509-575-6060.
The department is taking this opportunity to remind people the use of fireworks is illegal and sales are banned in the city and Yakima County.
