Hiker killed in rockfall at Mount Rainier National Park
MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Wash. - A -75-year-old hiker was killed in a rockfall Thursday afternoon inside Mount Rainier National Park after separating from his group to walk cross country by himself.
Park spokeswoman Patti Wold said the hiker separated from his group of four at about 1:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Eagle Peak Trail in the Tatoosh Range.
About an hour later, several hiking groups spotted a rockfall in the area, which was reported to park rangers at about 4:30 p.m.
A helicopter was dispatched to the scene, and the hiker's body was located in the rockfall, Wold said.
The helicopter crew extracted the body from the rockfall and confirmed that the man was dead. His body was taken to the Pierce County Medical Examiner, who identified him as Burt Meyers of Olympia.
