Grant given to help low-income families start businesses

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Thousands of dollars in grant money is available to low-income families trying to start up a business.

The Rural Community Development Resources Center has $50,000 to help in the effort. The business assistance includes educational workshops to develop business plans. Ten workshops will be held in Yakima. The agency wants to help eight new businesses start here in Yakima this year.

"We help them see and establish a foundation, financial foundation for their business," said Business Counselor Maria Rodriguez. "If they have a sturdy, good foundation then they're able to start their business and be successful."

Bakeries, retail and construction businesses are among those that have already started with the agency's help.
