Governors Brown, Inslee urge Trump for additional funds in Hanford cleanup

HANFORD, Wash. - Governors Kate Brown and Jay Inslee are calling for action by sending a letter to President Donald Trump asking for funds in Hanford Site cleanup efforts.

After a portion of a Plutonium Uranium Extraction Plant (PUREX) tunnel collapsed on May 9, Brown and Inslee said the incident is “an urgent reminder of the challenges in cleaning up the Hanford site that require a rededication of attention and resources in order to ensure progress moving forward," according to a statement released May 18, 2017.

Trump's budget blueprint from March did not include increased funds for the U.S. Energy Department's office charged with the cleanup of nuclear waste sites, such as Hanford, in the U.S.

Governors Brown and Inslee are urging the president and federal energy and budget officials for additional funding for the Office of River Protection and the Richland Operations Office which are responsible for Hanford cleanup.

Officials said Trump is expected to release a more detailed budget proposal next week.
