Girl pierced by branch at Wide Hollow Creek

YAKIMA, Wash. - A girl is in critical condition after she fell and pierced her chest on a branch.

Reports from the Yakima Police Department (YPD) said an 11-year-old girl, Amy Longee, was walking in a group of five kids just before noon, Saturday at Wide Hollow Creek, near West Valley Middle School.

As she walked across a log she slipped, falling on a branch which penetrated her chest and a bit of her heart, according to YPD spokesperson, Mike Bastinelli.

The group of kids called 9-1-1 and flagged down a nearby officer, who responded to the incident before medics were able to arrive.

Medics transported the victim to a local hospital, then later airlifted her to Harborview Medical Center (HMC) as her injury was serious. Reports said responders at HMC were able to stabilize her but she remained in critical condition. HMC officials said she would undergo a procedure Tuesday.

[Update, January 2018] Yakima Police awarded those who assisted in saving Longee, who is now in good condition.
