Gilbert Elementary School kicks off food drive

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Gilbert Elementary School kicked off their KIMA Kids for Cans food drive. The school has collected more than 500 food items their first week.

Fourteen schools across Yakima County have signed up. More than 22,000 pounds of food have been collected so far.

Highland High School is currently in first place with more than a ton of food collected. Students are happy to help.

"I'm really excited because I love helping out my community," said Taylor Yockey.

"I'm excited because we're helping kids and adults that need food," said Gilbert Elementary students.

The winner is determined by the ratio of food collected to students at the school. Satus Elementary School is in second place with more than 3,000 pounds of food collected.
