Fire burns nearly everything inside of Major's

UNION GAP, Wash. -- An iconic hamburger restaurant is little more than a shell of itself after heavily damaged by a fire this morning. The fire at Major's burned almost everything inside the building.

A local landmark badly burned. Major's is a mainstay in Union Gap. It's a scene that's hard to swallow for co-owner Steve Calhoun.

"When I first got here and there was just smoke rolling out, you're hoping when the buildings, when you can't see flames, you're hoping that the building is okay," said Steve.

The popular burger joint has been here for 13 years. It looks fine on the outside, but there's not much left on the inside.

"It's just kind of a numb feeling," said Steve.

At first glance, Union Gap Fire investigators said it looked like an accident. No one was inside when the fire started.

Customer Trina Garcia said she went to Major's more than any other restaurant.

"It's really sad and when we go by there, we're going to be sad we can't eat there anymore," said Trina. "I hope that they rebuild."

"Losing any local business, I think is definitely a bad thing for the community and as a new business owner, it'd be devastating to lose something to a fire," said Kevin Quinn.

Down, but not out. Steve vows to rebuild at the same spot. For now, Major's fans craving their favorites still have one other option in Yakima.

The fire marshal is investigating to determine how the fire actually started. Major's co-owner said he did not see any signs of foul play on his surveillance footage.
