Oregon State Police (OSP) Criminal Investigation Division detectives, with the assistance of Wasco County Sheriff's Office and Wasco County District Attorney's Office, are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred about midnight Tuesday in The Dalles, Oregon. The shooting resulted in the death of a 50-year old man. Two officers from The Dalles City Police Department were involved and not injured.
On September 17, 2012 at approximately 11:00 p.m. officers from The Dalles City Police Department were dispatched to a reported rape in progress at a residence in the 700 block of Hostetler Street. When officers arrived, both the victim and alleged suspect were at the residence. During the investigation, police had left with the victim to go to the hospital as other officers stayed at the residence with the suspect who was described as initially cooperative with the investigation.
At approximately 12 midnight, the suspect entered a bathroom and upon coming out he was holding a large kitchen-style knife and threatened the officers with the knife. Two patrol officers drew their firearms and ordered the man to drop the knife. During this encounter, both officers shot the man with their handguns. One of the officers started emergency medical care which was continued by paramedics when they arrived. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene. An independent witness was present when the shooting occurred.
The name of the two male officers and the deceased man are withheld at this time. Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure during officer-involved shooting investigations.
No other details including the actual residence address to be released at this time.
