Extra seat belt enforcement in Washington through early June
YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. - The annual Click It or Ticket campaign begins Monday when extra seat belt and child car seat patrols will be on duty throughout Washington state.
The campaign runs from May 14 until June 3, which includes Memorial Day weekend, typically one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
More than 150 law enforcement agencies across Washington state will participate, including the Yakima Police Department, Yakima County Sheriff's Office and Washington State Patrol.
Washington state laws require that everyone in a motor vehicle wear a safety restraint that is properly fastened.
Ninety-five percent of Washington drivers and passengers use their seat belts according to a new report from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
Yakima County lags behind the state with the lowest observed rate of buckling up at 87.6 percent, according to the report.
The fine for not wearing a seat belt or appropriate child restraint is $124.
