Ellensburg PD: Man punches teen in hate crime against Muslims
ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Police in Ellensburg are looking for anyone who witnessed a man punching a teen while perceiving that he was Muslim on E. 18th Avenue.
A 19-year-old pedestrian reported he was at the sidewalk between Walnut and Chestnut Street when a white man wearing dark clothing approached him between 6:30 and 7 p.m., Nov. 12.
The man made a disparaging remark regarding the teen's perceived religion as Muslim and proceeded to punch him several times, according to reports from the Ellensburg Police Department (EPD).
Police are asking any witnesses of this incident to call 962-7280. EPD is advising that a crime committed based on a perception of one's identity is very serious and detectives are investigating.
Detectives say an assault of this nature is rare in the Ellensburg community with only two reports made in the past six years.
