It happened at about 5:00 a.m. on the 600 block of S. 72nd Avenue. When officers arrived, they found the vehicle involved wrapped around a tree in a neighbors yard.
The two passengers were still inside the car and were unconscious. Fire department personnel had to remove the driver, a 17-year-old boy, from the vehicle. The driver and the passenger, a 33-year-old man, were transported to Yakima Regional Hospital and later flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. Police say they sustained life threatening injuries.
Police say the vehicle involved was racing a second car southbound on 72nd Avenue from Summitview just before the crash. The driver apparently lost control near Tieton Drive and hit a fence, power pole and parked vehicle before hitting a tree and coming to a stop.
Investigators believe intoxicants may have been involved in the crash, but say they are still investigating.
The driver of the second vehicle was not hurt in the crash.
This is the first report of a drag racing related crash in Yakima this year.
