YVC students vote to cancel Rachel Dolezal appearance during Black History Month
YAKIMA, Wash. - Yakima Valley College students have voted to cancel a Rachel Dolezal appearance.
Student government voted February 1 to cancel the event featuring Dolezal, who was set to speak on-campus as part of a month-long celebration of Black History Month.
Dolezal is known for a controversy in which she publicly identified as a black woman as the president of the NAACP in Spokane until she resigned in 2015 when it was revealed that she had lied about her African American heritage.
YVC spokesperson Jay Frank released a statement regarding the vote, saying "Today, responding to the volume of concern expressed by fellow students, ASYVC voted to cancel the planned appearance. Other events planned by ASYVC as part of Black History Month are unaffected by the cancellation of Ms. Dolezal’s event.”
