Deputies arrest suspects who stole valuables from locked mailboxes
YAKIMA, Wash. - Two people are now in custody for reportedly breaking locked mailboxes to steal items.
An update from Yakima police said deputies arrested a man and a woman after someone called police to report she thought she heard someone breaking into her mailbox December 11 around 4:40 a.m.
The woman said she saw an older silver minivan leaving the area. Deputies responded to the area and located the van in the 8700 block of Scenic Drive.
Investigators with the Yakima County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) found stolen mail and packages inside the silver van the suspects were driving. Deputies arrested 31 year old Derrick Adams and 29 year old Arica Hartigan, from Yakima, and the van was towed to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspects reportedly broke into dozens of mailboxes at five different Yakima locations and one Naches location. Reports said the suspects stole checks, Christmas gifts and other valuable items.
Anyone who had their items stolen in this incident is asked to contact YCSO or Yakima detectives at 575-6169.
