Body of man recovered from canal after he had been missing for two days
WAPATO, Wash. —
Divers recovered the body of a man out of a canal on Sunday after he’d had been missing for two days.
According to the Yakima County Sheriff's Office, Thomas Pence, 87, left his home Friday morning to collect the newspaper at the end of his driveway.
Officials say his wife noticed he had not returned home by that evening.
The family and sheriff deputies searched for him that night. One relative noticed tire tracks going into a nearby canal on the 700 block of Lateral A Road in Wapato.
The next day the Yakima County Sheriff's Office Water Rescue and Dive Team performed another search at the canal.
They found the truck submerged about ten feet underwater.
A diver was able to confirm that Pence was inside, but the current prevented him from getting a tow hook to a two truck set up.
Emergency crews went back to the scene around 10 A.M. Sunday and were able to get the truck out of the canal.
Officials believe that Pence may have suffered a heart attack or other medical condition as he was driving.
