Some dietary supplements claim they can build-up your immune system to help fight the flu. Dr. John Swartzberg, head of the editorial board at the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter, says save your money.
"There's no good evidence that any dietary supplement, including vitamins, are going to prevent you from getting the flu."
There are drugs that might be able to help you get better more quickly if they're taken the first 48 hours.
"So if you think you're coming down with the flu, you've got a high fever, feel like your body's been beaten up with a baseball bat and you're coughing terribly, call your doctor because there are two families of prescription drugs that for most people can be helpful," Swartzberg says.
Health experts say everyone 6 months and up should get a flu shot. It's not perfect, but it's the best we've got. And this year's vaccine is a good match to the viruses making people sick.
And don't worry; you cannot catch the flu from the flu shot.
